Volta1re. John CHURCHILL, known in history as "The Great Duke of Marlborough," was born at Ashe, in the county of Devon, on the 24th of June, 1650, O.S., or 5th of July, N.S. He was the second son of Sir Winston Churchill,1 a cavalier, who had suffered much for Charles the First, even to the confiscation of his estates, and has perpetuated the absurd extravagance of his loyalty in his book of'Divi Britannia." His father was a descendant of the Courcils of Poitou, one of whom followed the standard of the Conqueror into England. His mother, Elizabeth Drake, boasted of her connexion with the family which Sir Francis, the great navigator, raised into repute. Never 1 Sir Winston, in allusion to his misfortunes, assumed the motto of "Faithful but Unfortunate."
